Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Kyriakos Bourikas is Professor at the School of Science and Technology of the Hellenic Open University (HOU). He received his bachelor in Physics and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from University of Patras, in Greece. Then, he worked as a Research fellow in the Department of Environmental Sciences at Wageningen University, in Netherlands. He has received the Certificate of Postgraduate Training in “Open and Distance Education” from the HOU. He is the Director of the Postgraduate Education Programs of HOU “Environmental Catalysis for Pollution Abatement and Clean Energy Production” and “Chemical and Biomolecular Analysis”. He is also the Director of the Chemistry Laboratory of the HOU. He is co-author of about 100 articles and more than 130 communications at international and national conferences. His research has received more than 4000 citations ((h-index: 32, Source: Scopus). He is author of 2 books and co-author in a third one. He has developed digital educational material for the HOU in various subjects of Chemistry and Environmental Protection. He has worked as a reviewer in more than 30 international research journals. He has received scholarships as part of his studies, and has participated in many research and development programs. He has supervised a significant number of doctoral and master’s theses.

Research Interests

  • Catalysis for Clean and Renewable Energy
    i) Molecularly designed synthesis of solid catalysts for various processes, such as Oil Upgrading, Bio-Fuels production, Hydrogen production, etc.
    ii) Characterization and Catalytic evaluation of the above mentioned catalysts
    iii) Photocatalytic hydrogen production
  • Environmental Protection
    i) Evaluation of Sorbent Materials for the removal of toxic metal ions or organic pollutants
    ii) Air pollution control
    iii) Photocatalytic degradation of various pollutants
  • Interface Science
    i) Study of the “support/liquid” interface during the preparation of supported catalysts through interfacial deposition.
    ii) Fundamental studies related to the interface developed between solid porous materials surfaces and aqueous solutions.
