The School of Applied Arts and Sustainable Design is one of the four Schools of the Hellenic Open University, established by Law 2552/97 and since the academic year 2021 consists of four Members of Teaching and Research Staff (TRS) (2 Professors and 2 Associate Professors).
The scope of the School focuses on providing with knowledge and skills in the fields of visual and applied arts in combination with visual and digital technologies.
The School offers Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies.
The three (3) Postgraduate Programmes of Study (M.Sc.) of the School of Graphic Arts – Multimedia (GAM), Lighting Design (LD) and Acoustic Design and Digital Sound (ADDS) offer studies in the subject areas of Graphic Arts, Lighting Design and Acoustic Design combining Arts (Graphics, Light, Sound and Multimedia) and Digital Technology with the currently evolving pedagogy of distance learning.
The disciplines of the new Postgraduate Programmes of Study (M.Sc.) of the School “Protection of Cultural Heritage and Monuments of Nature from the Effects of Climate Change” which will be offered from the academic year 2021-22 are primarily related to the sciences of climatology and the environment, geology, telemetry and satellite applications, engineering sciences, architecture, history, archaeology, conservation of art and monuments. Interdisciplinary fields such as sociology, culture and environmental economics as well as computer science support the primary disciplines, depending on the direction of the programme and are fully compatible with the general objectives of the HOU.
At both Postgraduate and PhD level, the School’s Programmes of Study are innovative and interdisciplinary, designed to offer students not only scientific knowledge of specialisation that enables them to meet the modern demands of research, society and the labour market, but also to inspire them.
In order to support the research activities and to broaden the participation and activity of the students of the School, two (2) laboratories operate at the HOU’s premises in Patras: The Lighting Laboratory and Multimedia Laboratory.
The School is staffed by a sufficient number of faculty, many of whom are successful and active scholars/artists, who are also employed in other areas of higher education
The SAA (*) Deanery has not yet been established. The functions of the Deanery are performed by the Governing Committee of the HOU.

Postdoctoral Researchers and PhD candidates support this research activity.
Laboratories
The School of Applied Arts and Sustainable Design of the Hellenic Open University has two (2) laboratories:
1. The Lighting Design Laboratory
Lightinglab.eap
2. The Multimedia Lab
The Lighting Design Laboratory of the School of Applied Arts and Sustainable Design is established in 2016 with the aim of providing modern education in lighting design. Its design as a “lighted stage” allows for experimentation with a wide range of lighting and control possibilities.
Its capabilities can cover a wide range of light science:
Lectures and presentations are held in the laboratory for students of the M. Sc. “Lighting Design” of the HOU, as well as in departments of other universities, such as the Department of Architecture of the University of Patras.
The basic research currently being carried out in the laboratory is funded by the Research Support Programme (PENER) of the HOU and concerns the lighting design of historic buildings.
