Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Sarantis Mitropoulos is a Professor at the School of Science and Technology of the Hellenic Open University (HOU) with a subject area in “Management Information Systems and Security and Service Management”. He possesses many years of significant academic experience, having served as Professor and Dean of the School of Economic Sciences at the Ionian University, as well as Head of Department at the former TEI of Ionian Islands. Concurrently, since 2004, he has been a principal research associate at the Department of Informatics of the University of Piraeus, participating in teaching and numerous research projects. He is a Diploma holding Electrical and Computer Engineer from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), where he was proclaimed a Doctor (Ph.D.) with distinction and a scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY), with his dissertation focusing on the Integrated Management of Distributed Information Systems. Additionally, he holds a Master’s degree (Executive MBA) in Business Administration from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), with an emphasis on the synchronization of Business and Digital Strategy. He has served for a series of years as a Special Scientist in Informatics in Public Administration (Consignment Deposits and Loans Fund, IAPR) with a subject object of e-Government and Systems Development. Before his academic and public career, he worked for six years in the private sector as an executive in large IT and Telecommunications companies, managing integrated IT solution projects and telematic services. He has been elected a Senior Member of IEEE (USA) and is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE). His research has been recognized internationally, having received the 1st prize for excellent publication from Emerald publishing, while he participates in editorial boards of international scientific journals and conferences.

Research Interests

Dr. Mitropoulos’s research interests cover a wide range of modern technological and administrative fields, focusing on the following thematic areas:

  • Integrated Management of Distributed Systems / Networks: Cloud Computing, Internet of Things (IoT), resource optimization.
  • Systems Management Policies: Hierarchical analysis, policy conflict resolution, Quality of Service (QoS).
  • Modern Information Systems and Services Development Techniques: SOA Architectures, Microservices, software process simulation.
  • Risk Management and Cybersecurity: Critical infrastructure security, privacy, personal data protection, risk assessment.
  • Business Strategies for Information and Communication Technologies: Alignment of business and digital strategy (Business-IT Alignment), digital transformation.
  • Emerging Education Technologies (Metaverse): Web 3.0, virtual worlds, experiential learning, and gamification.

Research Activity

Dr. Mitropoulos’s research activity is characterized by active participation in the international scientific community and in research institutions:

  • Research Administration: He has served as a Member of the General Assembly of HFRI (Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation) representing the Ionian University, as well as a member of the Research Committee of the same institution.
  • Editorial Work: He is a member of the Editorial Board of the scientific journal International Journal of Business and Systems Research (Inderscience) and a Mentor at the Interscience Research Network (IRNET). He serves as an active Reviewer for numerous international journals and conferences.
  • Conference Organization: He participates systematically in international scientific conferences as Technical Program Co-Chair, member of scientific committees (Program Committees), and Session Chair.
  • International Recognition & Memberships: He was assigned the title of Senior Member of IEEE (USA) since 2005 and is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE). He has been honored with the Highly Commended Award (1st prize for excellent publication) by Emerald publishing.

Participation in Projects: He maintains a long-standing collaboration as a Research Associate with the University of Piraeus, participating in numerous cutting-edge research and development projects. Recently (Jan 2025), he joined the School of Science and Technology of the HOU as a faculty member, where he has already developed dynamic participation in Research-Development projects as a Scientific Coordinator.
