Tourism is a significant social and economic activity, a business sector, an industry, and a source of environmental and social change. It consists of various sectors, each of which presents diversity and can be analysed from different perspectives: economic-managerial, socio-cultural, environmental, and political-legal. Additionally, tourism is a geographically complex activity, driven by diverse areas of tourist origin and destinations, which are interconnected through transport networks and distribution channels.
In this context, the aim of this Module is to provide a systematic and conceptual foundation for investigating and understanding the complexity of tourism by analysing the various elements and activities that make up the tourism system. Furthermore, the module examines the managerial and legal dimensions of tourism, offering knowledge on the basic principles and concepts of management and their application in the tourism sector, as well as key issues of tourism legislation in Greece.

This Module aims to equip students with knowledge that will allow them to develop a deep understanding of the tourism sector, adopting an interdisciplinary approach that examines the economic, social, environmental and developmental dimensions of the tourism phenomenon. In this context, it examines a range of theoretical and practical issues that relate to the understanding, analysis and measurement of the economic dimension of tourism, from both microeconomic and macroeconomic perspectives.
Emphasis is placed on the recording and systematic analysis of key issues concerning sustainable tourism development, such as social and organisational changes, impacts on host communities, and local governance. At the same time, the development process is investigated through its characteristics, stages, and patterns, as well as the factors that contribute to their formation. The analyses reveal the multidimensional nature of the developmental dimensions of tourism, highlighting their importance in promoting sustainability.

During the 20th century, tourism developed into one of the most significant global industries, influenced by various external forces, such as economic, social, and environmental changes. These forces affect not only the nature of tourism development but also the ability of tourism businesses and destinations to remain competitive and sustainable.
In this context, this module aims to provide students with the necessary knowledge to understand the environment of the tourism industry, while also offering a managerial perspective on managing tourism and hospitality businesses as well as tourism destinations. Particular emphasis is placed on the strategic dimension of management, including the development of strategies to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of tourism and hospitality businesses.
Additionally, students will study the processes and stages of strategic planning for tourism destinations, recognising the need for managerial intervention to ensure longterm competitive advantage. All analyses converge on the necessity of strategic and sustainable planning so that tourism destinations and businesses can respond to the challenges of an ever-changing environment.

Marketing is a critical organisational function and a strategic priority for ensuring the sustainability and enhancing the competitiveness of tourism businesses, organisations, and destinations. Based on contemporary theory and practice of tourism services and destination marketing, this module explores current approaches and challenges faced by tourism businesses and destinations as they seek to attract tourists in an intensely competitive environment.
Special emphasis is placed on the development of tourism marketing strategies and the marketing mix, with a focus on value creation. The module also examines emerging trends that significantly impact the marketing of tourism services and destinations, such as changes in tourist behaviour, new technological advancements and innovations, evolving distribution channels, corporate social responsibility, and the intensification of international competition. All these issues are explored within the practical context of a series of contemporary case studies.

Tourism is an important social activity with multidimensional impacts, including economic, social, cultural, and environmental effects. Due to these impacts, state intervention is considered essential at all stages and in all areas of tourism activity to regulate the tourism market. The structure of public administration in the tourism sector varies depending on the significance each country attributes to tourism. Tourism policy is implemented through administrative mechanisms and the collaboration of various ministries, public authorities, local government, and independent bodies. Additionally, international organisations play a significant role due to the global nature of tourism.
In this context, the module aims to provide students with the necessary knowledge to explore and understand the complexity of state intervention in the tourism sector. Through the analysis of the individual components of the tourism system, the basic principles of public administration, and the administrative and legal aspects of tourism are examined. Furthermore, the module offers knowledge on the fundamental principles of tourism planning and policy.

Module Content: The Postgraduate Dissertation offers students the opportunity to conduct independent research on a selected topic that emerges from the curriculum. The dissertation is a central and significant component of the program, as it requires students to demonstrate autonomy and a deep understanding of the subjects taught, as well as of research practice and methodology. The dissertation process involves critically reviewing relevant literature, formulating feasible research questions and/or objectives, developing and applying an appropriate research methodology, analysing primary and/or secondary data, and presenting the research findings in the form of a final deliverable. Students are expected to independently manage the procedural and analytical decisions that arise during the research process, under the guidance of academic supervisors. The dissertation is an excellent opportunity for developing critical and analytical skills, enhancing students’ preparation for future academic and professional challenges.
