The first internal event for the presentation of the OpenEU project was successfully held on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Hellenic Open University (H.O.U.), in Patras.
OpenEU is an innovative pan-European initiative which includes eight of Europe’s leading open and distance learning universities, two brick-and-mortar universities from Eastern Europe, and 27 academic and non-academic organizations. The aim of the OpenEU Alliance is to create a pan-European open university that will enhance the digital, green, and social dimensions of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).
During the event, the following topics were presented:
- the vision and strategic objectives of the Alliance,
- the organizational structure and Work Packages of the project,
- as well as the future development prospects of OpenEU.
The key contributors to the event were:
- the Rector of H.O.U., Professor Manolis Koutouzis, who presented the vision and the importance of the University’s participation in the project,
- the project coordinator on behalf of HOU, Professor Achilleas Kameas, who explained the organizational structure of the implementation and presented selected work packages,
- and members of the H.O.U. project team: Professors Giorgos Koulaouzidis, Professor Dimitris Kalles, and Professor Sofi Leontopoulou, who presented key points of the work packages they coordinate.
A welcome address was given by the Coordinator of the OpenEU Alliance, Pastora Martínez Samper, who highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration in higher education.
The event was attended by more than 120 members of the broader academic community of HOU, both in person and via live online streaming — a fact that underscores the strong appeal of the initiative and confirms the University’s ongoing commitment to this important endeavor.
The Hellenic Open University, as an active member of the OpenEU Alliance, reaffirms its strategic role in shaping the future of higher education in Europe.
