The School of Science and Technology of the Hellenic Open University and the Department of Business Administration of Food and Agricultural Enterprises of the School of Economics and Business of the University of Patras offer the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Study Program titled “Precision Agriculture Applications” (EGA).

Objective – Description

The Interdepartmental Postgraduate Study program in “Precision Agriculture Applications” aims to provide students with specialized knowledge regarding the application of modern and innovative technologies in primary-sector agricultural production. In particular, the program offers basic knowledge of Precision Agriculture (PA) applications, with emphasis on the correct management of production factors (such as irrigation water, fertilizers, plant protection products etc), the reduction of production costs, and the increase in the competitiveness of agricultural production.

New technologies have been entering the field of agricultural production at a rapid and steadily increasing rate, fueling demand for appropriately specialized scientists. Furthermore, Precision Agriculture as an essentially novel concept and agricultural practice, is a cutting-edge technology for the agricultural sector which provides solutions to challenges of productivity and competitiveness in the field. This new approach means new, interdisciplinary jobs with cross-sectoral approaches.

The PSP aims to provide comprehensive training for scientists in Precision Agriculture.

Objectives

The Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Study Program (IPSP) aims to meet the modern need for graduates to provide solutions to the challenges of constantly evolving agricultural activity with reduced inputs, and the needs of the labor market as it is shaped by technological development.

A primary objective of the IPSP is to provide students with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical (workshop and field) experience, and familiarize them with the use of new technologies and the results of applied research in the field of Precision Agriculture.

Generally, the IPSP aims to:

  • Produce specialized graduates capable of staffing existing production units, research offices, research centers, and public services.
  • Train scientists in the principles, methods, and equipment required to apply Precision Agriculture in Greece.
  • Train scientists in the science and technology of modern cultivation methods through Precision Agriculture
  • Familiarize postgraduate students with the relevant modern laboratory and experimental equipment.
  • Familiarize postgraduate students with issues of the organization and operation of agricultural units that use large amounts of data

Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience with the modern equipment of the Plant Production Laboratory (with the PlantLab trade sign) of the Department of Business Administration of Food and Agricultural Enterprises of the University of Patras (DBAFA – UP) which will be made available for the purposes of the IPSP.

Upon successful completion of the IPSP, students will be able to:

  • Recognize and adopt the techniques, tools, and technology of Precision Agriculture (PA).
  • Understand the significance of PA in the management of natural resources.
  • Analyze and document the utility of PA for the environment and agricultural production,
  • Evaluate the economic results of the implementation of PA.
  • Identify, compile, categorize, and manage Precision Agriculture data.
  • Explain the contribution of PA to sustainable development.
  • Update their knowledge regarding PA.

Through both the content of the program and its approach methodology, students will have the opportunity to develop the following soft skills:

  • Ability to effectively communicate with teachers and other participants.
  • Ability to responsibly and efficiently manage their available time and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to act both independently and within a group environment (primarily through communication between participants).

The IPSP accepts:

  1. Agricultural & Forestry Sciences Graduates
  2. Engineering Graduates
  3. Sciences and Economics Graduates
  4. Graduates of Greek H.E.I., Polytechnic, and T.E.I. departments in fields related to the above-mentioned fields, as well as graduates of recognized foreign such institutions.

All students must possess a very good level of proficiency in English.

Note:

Holders of a degree or diploma of higher education means graduates of Greek Universities or Polytechnics or Higher School of Fine Arts or Higher School of Pedagogical and Technological Education or Higher Technological Educational Institutions (ATEI) or those who hold academically equivalent first cycle degrees from recognized foreign educational institutions with the degrees awarded by the Greek Higher Educational Institutions, in accordance with the provisions of article 304 of Law No. 4957/2022 (Government Gazette 141/21.07.2022, vol.)

Marking:

For the evaluation of the application to the Postgraduate Studies Programme, it will be examined whether the candidate’s institution of study is or may be included in the National Register of Recognised Higher Education Institutions of Foreign Countries and whether the candidate’s degree is or may be included in the National Register of Types of Degrees of Recognised Institutions of Foreign Countries.

The Hellenic Open University, if the degree is included in the list of article 307 of Law No. 4957/2022, must request a “Certificate of Place of Study”, which is issued and sent by the foreign university. If the place of study or part of the studies is confirmed as the Greek territory, the degree is not recognized, unless the part of the studies that took place in the Greek territory is in a public higher education institution or in a recognized foreign educational institution within the meaning of paragraph b) of article 299 of Law No. 4957/2022.

It is clarified that holders of a first degree of Higher Education are accepted in the Postgraduate Program.
