The School of Applied Arts and Sustainable Design is one of the four Schools of the Hellenic Open University, established by Law 2552/97. Since academic year 2023 it has 7 faculty members (4 Professors, 1 Associate Professor and 2 Assistant Professors).
The scope of the School focuses on providing knowledge and skills in the fields of:
The Undergraduate Program in Film Studies: Screenplay, Filmmaking, and Research (SKI) aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge to work in various fields of audiovisual and film production, providing them with the theoretical and practical skills in a wide range of fields, while at the same time pioneering the provision of quality higher distance education not only in the “conventional” subjects related to cinema, but also in-depth in the fields of film writing and narration, directing, filmmaking practices and providing knowledge in the field of animation.
The nine (9) Postgraduate Programs of Study (MSc) of the School: Acoustic Design and Digital Sound (ASP), Graphic Arts – Multimedia (GTP), Environmental Design (PSX), Lighting Design (SFP), Protection of Cultural Heritage and Monuments of Nature from the Effects of Climate Change (CCC),Interaction Generative Design – IGD, Visual Effects and Moving Image Design (SOK), Documentation and modeling of Monuments and Archaeological Sites (ATM) and Sustainable Interior Design of Buildings (EPK) offer studies in the subject areas of Acoustic Design, Graphic Arts, Sustainability, Pollution, Energy, Climate Change, Transportation, Cities, Buildings and Environmental Design, Lighting Design, Heritage Protection and New Design Technologies, Animation and Visual Effects, Algorithmic Design, Advanced technologies for capturing and documenting cultural heritage and Indoor Environmental Quality with rational use of energy, combining Arts (graphics, light, sound and multimedia), Digital Technology and Environmental Engineering with the current evolving pedagogy of distance education.
At Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral level, the School’s programs are innovative and interdisciplinary, designed to offer students not only specialized scientific knowledge that enables them to meet the modern demands of research, society and the labor market, but also to inspire them.
Three (3) laboratories are operating at the HOU’s premises in Patras in order to support the research activities and to broaden the participation and activity of the students of the School:
The School employs seven (7) faculty members and a sufficient number of teaching staff, many of whom are successful and active professors / researchers / PhDs / scholars / artists, who are also employed in other areas of higher education.

PhD Studies
For PhD Candidates, the Regulations for PhD Studies of the HOU apply.
At the School of Applied Arts and Sustainable Design of the Hellenic Open University, research is carried out in the fields of:
Postdoctoral Researchers and PhD candidates support this research activity.
Laboratories
The School of Applied Arts and Sustainable Design of the Hellenic Open University has two (2) laboratories:
1. The Lighting Design Laboratory
Lightinglab.eap
2. The Multimedia Lab
The Lighting Design Laboratory of the School of Applied Arts and Sustainable Design is established in 2016 with the aim of providing modern education in lighting design. Its design as a “lighted stage” allows for experimentation with a wide range of lighting and control possibilities.
Its capabilities can cover a wide range of light science:
Lectures and presentations are held in the laboratory for students of the M. Sc. “Lighting Design” of the HOU, as well as in departments of other universities, such as the Department of Architecture of the University of Patras.
The basic research currently being carried out in the laboratory is funded by the Research Support Programme (PENER) of the HOU and concerns the lighting design of historic buildings.
