The scope of MSc Program “Environmental Design” is to develop critical thinking, to obtain knowledge and skills for the sustainable management and protection of the environment from the scientists dealing with the planning, the management and the control of infrastructure works, of buildings, of public urban spaces, of landscape, of cities, of productive activities and the mitigation of climate change of the adaptation to it.

Options

The MSc Program “Environmental Design” delivers Postgraduate Specialization Diplomas in Environmental Design, with the following options:

  1. “Environmental Design of Infrastructure Works”
  2. “Environmental Design of Cities and Buildings”
  3. “Environmental Design for the Mitigation of Climate Change”

Scientific publications from the program

Upon successful completion of the MSc Program “Environmental Design”, and depending on chosen option, students will be able to:

– Understand the basic principles of sustainability, of environmental legislation and of environmental assessment, and be able to carry out environmental impact studies.

– Understand the principles of environmental procedures and pollution, their impact on humans, and the impacts of human activities on the environment.

– Design with environmental friendly and sustainable way the infrastructure works (transport, energy, hydraulics, coastal and erosion protection works, pollution protection works, etc.), the buildings, the cities and the productive activities.

– Understand the climate change phenomenon and its impacts, to implement methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to adapt in a world with a changing climate.

The MSc Program “Environmental Design” accepts holders of bachelor’s degrees and graduates of higher education institutes from a similar field of study.

The MSc Program “Environmental Design” is taught in Greek. Knowledge of at least one foreign language and familiarity with the use of computers, e-mail and the internet will greatly facilitate attendance and participation in the MSc Environmental Design.

Note:

The term “Graduates of University or Technical Education Institute departments” denotes holders of degrees from departments of Greek Universities or TEIs, or those who possess corresponding titles from foreign institutions recognized as possessing the same educational level by the Inter-University Center for the Recognition of Foreign Degrees (DIKATSA) or the Hellenic NARIC (DOATAP), or the ITE correspondingly, or holders of degrees from the aforementioned departments of foreign institutions recognized as possessing the same educational level*

The term “University” denotes University departments, Polytechnics, and the Athens School of Fine Arts.

*Note. In accordance with article 34, paragraph 7 of Law 4485/2017, “Post-graduate degrees is not awarded to students who possess bachelor’s degrees that have not been recognized by the Hellenic NARIC (DOATAP), in accordance with the Law 3328/2005 (A80)

The Post-graduate programme accepts graduates or higher institution diplomas of related disciplines. The programme is offered in Greek. 

The knowledge of a foreign language and good computer-Internet skills would be useful for the successful participation in the programme.

Note:

Holders of a degree or diploma of higher education means graduates of Greek Universities or Polytechnics or Higher School of Fine Arts or Higher School of Pedagogical and Technological Education or Higher Technological Educational Institutions (ATEI) or those who hold academically equivalent first cycle degrees from recognized foreign educational institutions with the degrees awarded by the Greek Higher Educational Institutions, in accordance with the provisions of article 304 of Law No. 4957/2022 (Government Gazette 141/21.07.2022, vol.)

Marking:

For the evaluation of the application to the Postgraduate Studies Programme, it will be examined whether the candidate’s institution of study is or may be included in the National Register of Recognised Higher Education Institutions of Foreign Countries and whether the candidate’s degree is or may be included in the National Register of Types of Degrees of Recognised Institutions of Foreign Countries.

The Hellenic Open University, if the degree is included in the list of article 307 of Law No. 4957/2022, must request a “Certificate of Place of Study”, which is issued and sent by the foreign university. If the place of study or part of the studies is confirmed as the Greek territory, the degree is not recognized, unless the part of the studies that took place in the Greek territory is in a public higher education institution or in a recognized foreign educational institution within the meaning of paragraph b) of article 299 of Law No. 4957/2022.

PSH_from the academic year 2023-2024

The MSc Program “Environmental Design” is organized into four (4) Thematic Units (T.U.) and the Postgraduate Diploma Thesis, and awards Postgraduate Specialization Diplomas (PSD). The program is organized into three (3) options and includes a total of nine (9) Thematic Units. Students are required to select an Option. The minimum duration of studies is two (2) academic years. To obtain the Postgraduate Specialization Diploma (PSD), students must successfully complete four (4) T.U. in addition to completing and presenting their Diploma Thesis.

The MSc Program “Environmental Design” awards Postgraduate Specialization Diplomas in “Environmental Design”, in the following Specializations:

  1. “Environmental Design of Infrastructure Works”
  2. “Environmental Design of Cities and Buildings”
  3. “Environmental Design for the Mitigation of Climate Change”

The first T.U. PSX50 “Sustainability – Environmental Assessment” is mandatory for all three (3) Specializations.

Specialization 1: “Environmental Design of Infrastructure Works”

Postgraduate Diploma Thesis (PDT) (40 ECTS)

T.U. Selection Instructions

Students in the first (1st) year who attend only one (1) T.U. must select PSX50, while those who attend two T.U. must also select PSX51. Students who have more available time may also select PSX53.

Students in the second (2nd) term may only select PSX61 and concurrently prepare their PDT.

To complete the PSP in two academic terms, students must successfully complete at least three (3) T.U. in the first term, and one T.U. in the second term concurrently with the preparation of their PDT, in accordance with the aforementioned instructions.

Students can present their Postgraduate Diploma Thesis only after successfully completing all T.U. of the Option they have chosen.

Option 2: “Environmental Urban and Transport Design”

T.U. Selection Instructions

Students in the first (1st) year who attend only one (1) T.U. must select PSX50, while those who attend two T.U. must also select PSX51. Students who have more available time may also select PSP53.

Students in the second (2nd) year may only select PSP62 and concurrently prepare their PDT.

To complete the PSP in two academic terms, students must successfully complete at least three (3) T.U. in the first term, and one T.U. in the second term concurrently with the preparation of their PDT, in accordance with the aforementioned instructions.

Students can present their Postgraduate Diploma Thesis only after the successfully completing all the T.U. of the Specialization they have chosen.

Specialization 3: “Environmental Design for the Management of Climate Change”
