The aim of this course, according to the founding decree, is to train scientists in computer science and to acquire knowledge and skills relating to specific application areas in the field of computer science, such as computer systems, decision systems, signal processing, computational mathematics and telematics.

Brief description

The undergraduate programme of studies “Computer Science” (PLI ) of the Hellenic Open University is a course structured on the foundational and modern achievements of computer science. The aim of the course is to make its graduates (a) skilled in computer science, (b) capable of participating in a key role in the development and management of information and communication systems, mainly in the IT industry/market of Greece. The multitude of units of the course and the breadth of its subjects make it capable of providing students with the general principles of science and helping them to understand and assimilate new technologies, tools and systems in the future. In the first years, a set of compulsory units covering the core of computing are offered, while in the final year of studies, students can choose units based on personal and professional interests. Studying the course leads to a state recognised computer science degree with full professional rights.

Classification according to ISCED-2011 of Unesco:

  • based on the field of education: 48 Computing
  • based on the level of study: 6

Classification according to ISCED-2013 of Unesco:

  • based on the field of education: 0610 Information Communication Technologies (ICTs)

Graduates of high school secondary education or of an equal or corresponding secondary education qualification from within the country or abroad are eligible for the programme.

Knowledge of a foreign language, primarily English, as well as familiarity with the use of computers, e-mail and the Internet will greatly assist in attending the programme.

1st year of study

2nd year of study

3rd year of study

4th year of study

To obtain the degree it is necessary to complete 12 units and the two-cycle laboratory subjects Thematic Units and the PLI PRO.

The following units are offered:

Core Units (compulsory):

Elective Units:

The Laboratory Thematic Units (LTU) offered are as follows:

Prerequisite units – Instructions for the declaration of units

During the first year of study you can choose from one (1) to four (4) first-year units. If the student chooses one, it is mandatory to choose the Laboratory Unit PLIPRO: Programming, if he/she wishes to choose a second one, it must be the Laboratory Module PLI PRO10: Introduction to Computer Science. Due to the fact that PLH PRO is considered as not very demanding (6 ECTS), it is highly suggested students to choose this module in combination with PLH10. If he/she chooses three, it is recommended to choose in addition to PLI 10 also PLI 12: Mathematics for Computer Science I, while if he/she has the required time and wishes to choose four, he/she can choose PLI 11: Principles of Software Engineering.

The student can choose any unit if he/she has completed all the units of the previous year or he/she chooses at the same time the remaining ones (from the previous year).

The Laboratory Thematic Unit (LTU) “Digital Systems Laboratory” (PLI DΙ, PLI DΙΙ) is a compulsory LTU of two study cycles, lasting one academic year each. The first course is offered in the 2nd year and the second course in the 3rd year. It is not permitted to follow the PLI DI and PLI DΙΙ modules at the same time. The second course is offered in the 3rd year. Students who have completed or are studying in parallel in the unit area PLI 21 are entitled to attend the L.T.U. In order to enroll in the second cycle, students must either have completed PLI DΙ or have acquired the right to take the PLI DΙ examination.

In the fourth year of studies it is compulsory to attend one of the following units: PLI 23, PLI40, PLI 42 και PLI 47.

The successful completion of unit PLI 37 ‘Informatics and Education’ provides pedagogical and teaching competence to the graduates of the programme.

Unit Order

The following order of prerequisite units is defined.

  • PLI 12 Mathematics for Computer Science I
  • PLI 20 Discrete Mathematics and Mathematical Logic
  • PLI 30 Foundations of Computer Science

Students may declare together PLI 12 and PLI 20 or PLI 20 and PLI 30, if they have declared during the previous academic year PLI 12 or PLI 20 respectively and repeat it with only final examinations.

The choice of the unit PLI 40 is allowed only if the student has completed in previous years or will complete in the current year (simultaneously with it) at least 11 other units.
