Subject of the ΜΑ

Education and immersion in the concepts, theoretical issues, and practical applications of folk/popular culture and modern cultural heritage.

 

Object – Purpose

The program aims at a focused and holistic approach to modern popular culture, highlighting popular events and phenomena in both traditional and modern Greek society and its management practices and cultural policies. The approach to popular culture encompasses theoretical and methodological issues. It includes the analysis and interpretation of specific manifestations of popular culture (such as folk art/handicrafts, folk events/carnivals, narrative discourse, dietary habits, production and consumption of goods, folk forms of entertainment, etc.), familiarization with the concepts of popular culture and cultural heritage, as well as the policies of culture, particularly the management policies and practices of modern cultural heritage, is a key pillar of the postgraduate program. The program covers the period from the mid-19th century to today (21st century), with Greece featuring as the main reference area, enriched with examples from the Balkans and the wider Western/European area.

The total sum of ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) required for the postgraduate degree in “Folk/Popular Culture and Modern Cultural Heritage” is 120 ECTS (30 ECTS per semester).

 

Duration of Study

The minimum time required for the completion of the Program is two (2) years or four (4) semesters.

 

Language of the Program

The official language of the Program is Greek. This means that the language in which all materials content and written assignments is Greek.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the ΜΑ, students are expected to:

  • Understand the basic conceptual, theoretical, and methodological principles involved in the study of popular culture and cultural heritage.
  • Distinguish the different ethno-cultural and local traditions that historically shaped Greek popular culture.
  • Recognize the diversity and dynamic character of popular culture.
  • Interpret Greek popular culture from a comparative and cross-cultural perspective.
  • Apply interdisciplinary approaches to the study of popular culture and cultural heritage.
  • Develop and promote innovative ideas using new technologies (AR, VR) in cultural and educational institutions and organizations (collections, schools, museum exhibitions, cultural events, etc.).
  • Manage professional activities and/or work plans responsibly and efficiently within the context of popular culture research and the promotion of modern cultural heritage.

Admission Requirements

The Post-graduate programme accepts graduates or higher institution diplomas of related disciplines. The programme is offered in Greek. 

The knowledge of a foreign language and good computer-Internet skills would be useful for the successful participation in the programme.

Note:

Holders of a degree or diploma of higher education means graduates of Greek Universities or Polytechnics or Higher School of Fine Arts or Higher School of Pedagogical and Technological Education or Higher Technological Educational Institutions (ATEI) or those who hold academically equivalent first cycle degrees from recognized foreign educational institutions with the degrees awarded by the Greek Higher Educational Institutions, in accordance with the provisions of article 304 of Law No. 4957/2022 (Government Gazette 141/21.07.2022, vol.Α΄)

Marking:

For the evaluation of the application to the Postgraduate Studies Programme, it will be examined whether the candidate’s institution of study is or may be included in the National Register of Recognised Higher Education Institutions of Foreign Countries and whether the candidate’s degree is or may be included in the National Register of Types of Degrees of Recognised Institutions of Foreign Countries.

The Hellenic Open University, if the degree is included in the list of article 307 of Law No. 4957/2022, must request a “Certificate of Place of Study”, which is issued and sent by the foreign university. If the place of study or part of the studies is confirmed as the Greek territory, the degree is not recognized, unless the part of the studies that took place in the Greek territory is in a public higher education institution or in a recognized foreign educational institution within the meaning of paragraph b) of article 299 of Law No. 4957/2022.

The Postgraduate Programme “Folk/Popular Culture and Modern Cultural Heritage” is organized into four (4) academic semesters, which include:

  1. Eight (8) Course Modules (C.M): four (4) mandatory and four (4) elective
  2. Internship Programme
  3. Master’s Thesis.

The minimum duration of studies is four (4) academic terms. The total sum of ECTS required in order to obtain the Postgraduate Specialization Diploma (PSD) is 120.

Guidelines on Module selection

You can choose from one (1) to two (2) Modules per semester (30 ECTS).

In the process of registering for a Module, the Modules of the previous semesters must be successfully completed first and then the Module of the next semester must be selected. For example, if you have successfully completed one (1) Module from the first semester and in the second semester you wish to select two (2) Modules, you must opt for one (1) Module from the first semester and one (1) from the second semester and so on.

In the 4th semester, you may choose either the Module LPK63, or the Master’s Thesis (LPKDE) or the Internship Programme (PLKPA).

The preparation of the Master’s Thesis presupposes the successful attendance of the six (6) Modules of the Programme.

The presentation of the Master’s Thesis takes place after the successful completion of all the program’s Modules.

In order to obtain the Postgraduate Diploma of Specialization it is compulsory: either the successful completion of six (6) Modules, as well as the successful elaboration and presentation of the Master’s Thesis, or the successful completion of seven (7) Modules and the Internship Programme (PLKPA).

Financial contribution for admitted students until the academic year 2023-2024:

The financial contribution for students to the Programme is as follows:

The cost of each Module is €450, the cost of the Internship Programme is €525 and the cost of the Master Thesis is €1,200.

The total financial contribution for the students who choose the six (6) modules and the Master Thesis is: €3,900.

The total financial contribution for the students who choose the seven (7) modules and the Internship Programme is: €3,675.

The cost of each Module is €500, the cost of the Internship Programme is €500 and the cost of the Master Thesis is €1,000.
