Dear colleagues and friends,
We are pleased to announce the Workshop / Mini Conference “Development, Politics and Infrastructures in the Eastern Mediterranean” which will take place on 27 October 2023 from 2:45 PM – 7:00 PM EEST. The event explores the infrastructural aspects of society-wide transformations in the contemporary Eastern Mediterranean, focusing on Cyprus, Greece and Turkey. The panels and the following discussion aim to answer questions such as:
- What insights can be drawn from Science and Technology Studies (STS), history of technology and architecture, anthropology, and geography regarding the interrelationship between themes such as infrastructure, power, state, and modernity in the region?
- In what ways are the distinct historical events, transformations, and governance cultures of Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey co-shaped by infrastructures in their contemporary histories?
- What commonalities and differences can be identified in the approaches to development and infrastructures?
- What specific socio-political transitions have been facilitated by the use of ‘development’ as an ideological framework?
- How can this comparison help to widen the research to encompass the rest of the Eastern Mediterranean?
The event will be fully online and open to all.
