The aim of the distance learning Inter-Institutional Master’s Program, known as MSc in “Educational Sciences: Special Education and Training for People with Oral and Written Language Difficulties” is to offer in-depth knowledge concerning issues pertaining to oral and written language difficulties, theoretical frameworks associated with speech problems, and educational strategies that can be developed and applied to address and/or alleviate those difficulties faced by monolingual and bilingual/multilingual individuals.

Programme title in English: Education Science: Special Education for People with Oral and Written Language Difficulties

ECTS Programme Credit Units: 120 (30 ECTS per semester)

The minimum duration of study is two (2) academic years and the maximum duration is six (6) academic years.

Language of instruction: The language of instruction of the programme is Greek. For the successful attendance of the unit(s) a good knowledge of English at B2 level is required.

In Greek, all the teaching material will be offered as well as all the assignments and examinations required for the successful completion of the programme. In case there is no Greek bibliography to cover part of the units of the programme’s units, part of the teaching material may be offered in English. Also, English literature may be provided as supplementary literature.

Establishment
The Joint Inter-University Postgraduate Studies Programme (JMP) between the HOU and the University of Thessaly started its operation in the academic year 2016-2017, offering six (6) units and an Internship unit.

After completing the Inter-Institutional master’s degree program MSc in “Educational Sciences: Special Education and Training for People with Oral and Written Language Difficulties” students are expected to:

  • know the basic concepts of Special Education and be familiar with educational assessment issues
  • know the theoretical and methodological issues related to language development in both monolinguals and bilinguals/multilinguals
  • understand the relationship between language and cognition, the role of cognitive factors in the processing of language as well as the two primary mechanisms involved in language processing, namely production and comprehension
  • have knowledge of the theoretical frameworks pertaining to the developmental kind of difficulties of oral and written language
  • be familiar with the fundamental research designs and their utilization in the field of Special Education
  • have acquired knowledge of the assessment and support services available for individuals experiencing difficulties in oral and written communication
  • Can describe, design, and implement educational interventions for monolingual and bilingual/multilingual speakers with oral and written language difficulties.

In the joint distance learning inter-university programme “Education Sciences: Special Education for People with Oral and Written Language Difficulties” is open to graduates of Departments and Faculties of Universities of the Greek Federation and similar recognized institutions abroad, as well as graduates of Departments of ATEI of related cognitive unit. More specifically:

  1. Graduates of Pedagogical Departments (Special Education, Primary Education, Pre-school Education)
  2. Graduates of the Department of Education and Social Policy of the University of Macedonia
  3. Graduates of the Departments of Philology of ΑΕΙ
  4. Graduates of foreign-language faculties of ΑΕΙ
  5. Graduates of the Department of Mediterranean Studies of the University of the Aegean from the Department of Linguistics of the South-Eastern Mediterranean,
  6. Graduates of the Departments of Psychology
  7. Graduates of the Departments of Psychology and Psychology
  8. Graduates of Speech and Language Therapy Departments of ΑΤΕΙ
  9. Graduates of the Department of Infant Care ΑΤΕΙ
  10. Graduates of other related to the units and objectives of the programme of the university of the national territory or graduates of recognized similar institutions abroad
  11. Graduates of corresponding Departments of ΑΤΕΙ, relevant to the units and objectives of the program.

For the successful completion of the programme, a proven good knowledge of English language at B2 level is required.

Note:

Holders of a degree or diploma of higher education means graduates of Greek Universities or Polytechnics or Higher School of Fine Arts or Higher School of Pedagogical and Technological Education or Higher Technological Educational Institutions (ATEI) or those who hold academically equivalent first cycle degrees from recognized foreign educational institutions with the degrees awarded by the Greek Higher Educational Institutions, in accordance with the provisions of article 304 of Law No. 4957/2022 (Government Gazette 141/21.07.2022, vol.)

Marking:

For the evaluation of the application to the Postgraduate Studies Programme, it will be examined whether the candidate’s institution of study is or may be included in the National Register of Recognised Higher Education Institutions of Foreign Countries and whether the candidate’s degree is or may be included in the National Register of Types of Degrees of Recognised Institutions of Foreign Countries.

The Hellenic Open University, if the degree is included in the list of article 307 of Law No. 4957/2022, must request a “Certificate of Place of Study”, which is issued and sent by the foreign university. If the place of study or part of the studies is confirmed as the Greek territory, the degree is not recognized, unless the part of the studies that took place in the Greek territory is in a public higher education institution or in a recognized foreign educational institution within the meaning of paragraph b) of article 299 of Law No. 4957/2022.

It is clarified that holders of a first degree of Higher Education are accepted in the Postgraduate Program.

Certification of English language competency at level B2

English competency (level B2) is proven according to article 10, Presidential Decree 85/2022  “Determination of qualifications for appointment in the public sector (Qualification-Department)” (Α΄ 232), in combination with Part C΄ and namely “LANGUAGE CERTIFICATES ” of no. 20/01.02.2023 “Amendment of no. 94/20.6.2022 of the decision of the SUPREME COUNCIL FOR CIVIL PERSONNEL SELECTION (ASEP)”Procedure for determining the fixed parts of the content of staff selection announcements based on predetermined and objective criteria (Articles 28 – 30 of Law 4765/2021 ) (B’ 3614)” (B’ 594) with language proficiency certificates.

English competency (level B2) is also proven with certificates of other institutions (not limited to universities) of an equivalent level, irrespective of their legal form, provided they are certified or recognized by the competent authority of the country concerned for conducting examinations and issuing certificates of proficiency in English at the appropriate level. These certificates must be accompanied by a proof document from the issuing body that both the issuing body and the language certificate competency are certified by the competent national authority and also and that the certification also concerns the evaluation of basic communication skills (written language production, oral language production, written language comprehension and oral language comprehension).

If there is no certification or recognition body in the country concerned, a certificate from the relevant Ministry or Embassy of Greece is required, confirming that the certificates issued by the above bodies to third parties for whom English is not a native language are accepted in public services of that country as valid evidence of English at the appropriate level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The competent regulatory authority for Great Britain is the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual).

General notes:

  • Advanced level foreign language certificates also prove knowledge of a lower (required) level of the foreign language.
  • Foreign Language Teaching Certification does not prove the competence in a foreign language. In order to prove their competence in the foreign language, candidates who hold the relevant certification must provide the foreign language certificates as provided for in this Annex where applicable
  • All foreign language degrees must be accompanied by their official translation into the Greek language, except the above English language proficiency certificates, which are accepted without requiring any translation and validation.

Guidelines for the selection of units

All modules are compulsory.

You may choose from one (1) to two (2) modules per semester.

When declaring a module, you must first exhaust the modules of the previous semester and then declare the modules of the next semester or select the remaining modules (from the previous semester) at the same time.

In the first semester, if you wish to select one (1) module, you must declare EAG50.
Then you must select the subsequent semesters’ modules according to the prerequisites of each module.

In the second semester, in order to choose EAG52 you must have successfully completed EAG51 and in order to choose EAG53 you must have successfully completed EAG50 and EAG51.

In the third semester, in order to choose EAG60 you must have successfully completed EAG50. In order to choose EAG61 you must have successfully completed all the modules of the first two semesters (EAG50, EAG51, EAG52, EAG53).

In the fourth semester, in order to choose EAG62 (Practical Training) you must have successfully completed the modules EAG50, EAG51, EAG52, EAG53, EAG60 & EAG61.
The completion of the programme requires the acquisition of 120 ECTS credits, which results from the successful completion of all the Themes, as well as the Practical Training (which will be carried out in public assessment and support structures for people with oral and written language disorders).

The financial contribution for students to the Programme is as follows:

The cost of each Module with 10 ECTS is €300, the cost of each Module with 20 ECTS is €600 and the cost of the Practical Training Module is €900.

The total financial contribution for the Programme is: €3,600.
