The aim of the Programme is to offer knowledge about the evolution and the specific characteristics of Greek culture and to present its contribution over time.

The Hellenic Culture Programme of Studies (HC) is the only programme that offers an interdisciplinary and longitudinal study of the aspects, manifestations and contribution of Hellenic culture in the Greek academic environment. With this Programme of Studies, which is now a well-established undergraduate programme with a significant offer, the HOU has achieved the offer of university studies with an original and alternative character compared to conventional universities.

The Programme combines:

  • the study of history as a background,
  • the study of intellectual creation (literature, philosophy, sciences), the arts (visual arts, urban planning, theatre, dance, music, cinema, etc.) and
  • the study of social life (political organisation, public and private life, the diasporic phenomenon, the reception and integration of the past in today’s Greek reality),

while encouraging the examination of the cultural phenomena that have been and are still manifested in Greece in the wider European and global context of reference.

The specific Thematic Units that make up the Programme are twelve (12) and correspond to essential and internationally recognized dimensions of the contribution of Greek culture. Students acquire theoretical training on the concepts of culture and civilization and then study history, art, architecture, and urban planning, aspects of public and private life, ancient and modern, Greek literature from the Homeric epics to the 20th century, philosophy and science, ancient theatre, modern theatre and cinema, music and dance, archaeology and museology, as well as the global foci of the Greek diaspora.

In particular, the aim of the Programme is to offer broad knowledge and critical perception of the cultural quests and events that developed in the successive periods of Greek history, ancient, medieval and modern, highlighting the relevance of cultural processes (continuities, discontinuities, revivals, identity quests, the issue of cultural heritage, etc.) with their respective historical and social components.

The HC programme of studies cultivates students’ critical and synthetic thinking on the material and immaterial dimensions of Greek culture, on its contribution to the global cultural scene and on the interaction between the present and the past, while studying the interactions with other cultures that have always been imposed by Greece’s geographical position.

Guidelines on Module selection

The first and second academic year modules are compulsory.

During the first year of study, it is recommended that students choose two modules: ELP11 and ELP 10. If he/she does not have time, he/she should choose the module ELP 11. If he/she has enough time to choose more than two modules, then in addition to modules ELP11 and ELP10, he/she can also choose ELP12.

From the modules of the third year, the student must compulsorily register the modules ELP22 and ELP31 and choose one more module from the modules EPO 20, EPO 21 and EPO 22.

The student is required to attend 3 of the modules offered in the fourth year.

In the process of declaring a module, the previous year’s modules must be exhausted first and then the declaration of the next year’s module must begin. For example, if you have successfully completed 2 modules from the first year and you want to choose 2 modules for the following year, you must necessarily declare the third module of the first year and 1 module from the following year, and so on.

In order to obtain a degree, the successful completion of 12 modules is mandatory.
